HISTORY
Government National College, Karachi, as we know it today, was founded by a group of dedicated teachers and city philanthropists as “National College” in 1956 under the umbrella of “National Educational Society” established in 1954. The society comprised of Mr. Saudagar Darwesh (President), Professor Hasan Adil (Secretary), Professor Hasnain Kazmi, Mr. Asghar Hussain (Advocate), Mr. M. M. Malik and Mr. Shamsuz Zaman (Advocate). The college was initio headed by Professor Hasan Adil—March, 1956 through March, 1973. It was nationalised on September 1, 1972. The college had been working under double shift programme till 1993 when the evening shift of the college was granted the status of a separate and independent college by the Provincial Government.
The responsibilities of fulfilling the ideals and the aspirations of a nation generally lie with the educational institutions of the country. It is a fact now that both students as well as the teachers of this college have played their roles quite successfully so far in this respect. That is why Government National College, Karachi, is one of the well-known colleges of the city. Moreover, it is the biggest college of Karachi being run under one roof with all the three faculties of Science, Arts and Commerce up to degree level being affiliated with the University of Karachi.
Govt. National College is undergoing rapid evolution. To its Science Faculty, Department of Computer Science was added in 1996 when Computer Science was offered at intermediate level for the first time in any government college of Karachi. Computer Science at B.Sc. level was introduced in 1998.
Government of Sindh, with this benevolent vision that education of Information Technology should come within the reach of common people also, introduced a three-year B.C.S. (Bachelor in Computer Science) program in ten public sector colleges of the province in 2001. Govt. National College, Karachi, had the honour of being the first selectee for this program. Government of Sindh and the college administration took the project on war-footings and now BCS block is a beautiful reality in itself with fully equipped laboratories, well furnished classrooms and an independent library containing several hundred books of various disciplines.
Historically speaking, the college excels in its academic, curricular and extra-curricular activities.

5. Professor Dr. Shafique Ali Khan M.A. (English language and literature) 1959. University of Sindh. M.A. (Political Science) 1961. University of Sindh. Diploma in Sociology 1961. University of Sindh. Ph.D. (Political Science) 1970. University of Sindh. Thesis title: Evolution of Two-Nation Theory with Reference to Subcontinent India and Pakistan. Besides several research papers and popular articles he published several books. Period as principal: June 4, 1987 through December 4, 1988. He died on October 20, 1991, due to renal failure, while in service. God may rest his soul in eternal peace.
6. Professor S. Ahmad Hussain Zaidi Period as principal: December 5, 1988 through May 27, 1992. God may rest his soul in eternal peace.
7. Professor Mukarram Ali Khan Sherwani M.A. (Political Science), 1963. University of Karachi. Period as pruincipal: May 28, 1992 through June 7, 1993. His contribution to the development of Hockey at College and National level is unforgettable. He was commentator of Hockey and Football on Radio Pakistan and Selector of Hockey team of University of Karachi. He wrote several articles on sports in “ Khel ki Duniya” . He organized and conducted Radio Pakistan’s Sports Magazine for World Service from 1981 to 1989 in collaboration with Professor F.M. Nazir and Professor Ali Nawaz. He died on July 3, 1993, due to cardiac and respiratory failure, while still in office. May God rest his soul in eternal peace.
8. Professor Syed Siraj-ul-Islam Bukhari M.Sc. (Physics) 1961. University of Karachi. Period as principal: June 8, 1993 through September 23, 1999 and then from October 15, 1999 through May 08, 2000. Besides being a Professor of Physics, he was first Urdu Commentator through BBC for Radio Pakistan during First World Cup of Cricket (1975) from England and then again in 1979. He was appointed as Divisional Warden, Civil Defence for Landhi-Korangi Division, by Sindh Government during 1965 and 1971 wars. He served as Chairman, Sports Committee, Landhi-Korangi Municipal Committee from 1964 to 1969. Being a seasoned Cricket Administrator, he is serving as elected Honorary Secretary of Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA) since 1983. He has organised a number of tests and international matches including World Cup 1987 and 1996. Served Pakistan Cricket Board as Secretary and Chairman of Domestic Tournament Committee from 1988 to 1996 and from 1998 to 1999, respectively, and this way built the present Pakistan Domestic Cricket Structure. Acted as Manager of Pakistan Cricket Team in Sharjah Triangular Tournaments in 1995 and 1999. He is a regular official guest invited by Cricketers Benefit Fund Series (CBFS), Sharjah (UAE) and Life Member of Pakistan Cricket Board. He has to his credit the Pride Distinction of being included in the Millennium Edition of International Directory of Distinguished Leadership being published by American Biographical Institute Inc. North Carolina, USA.

12. Professor F. M. Nazir M.A. (Political Science). 1967 (First class second position). University of Karachi. A well known political analyst. Reader on review panel of Oxford University Press of Pakistan. From 1981 to 1989 he collaborated with Prof. Mukarram Ali Khan Sherwani in conducting Radio Pakistan Sports Magazine for world service. Author of several outstanding articles. Period as principal: January 20, 2001 to April 15, 2002.
